Birmingham Arrival?

It's Larissa taking over control again.  Although, I must applaud my co-pilot's effort his sarcasm outdoes mine EVERY time.

Well, after realizing that we had about 400-500 cars leaving Bossier City yesterday, we left before the herd and then did not even stop for lunch which we were informed at the driver's meeting would feed about 500.  We did our own thing, stopping when we needed to, and kept the cruise control about 2 mph above the speed limit.  At one point while I was driving I heard something funny and we pulled over to find our car's bra had come loose.  So while I stayed in the vehicle with the hazard lights blinking, Jeff fixed it and a very nice couple with MAA stopped to make sure we were alright.

I set the GPS to the address of the final arrival stop, the Riverchase Galleria Shopping Mall.  However, when we finished its directions, we discovered, much to our surprise that we were the very FIRST to arrive at the end of our long journey!!  A few minutes later two more cars pulled up and we all decided to venture inside the mall for a pit stop.

In the mall, we found my parents and there was a joyful reunion since we have not seen them since our wedding in September of 2007.  We then started to see other MAA members ambling about the mall and decided to venture outside to see how many other cars had arrived.  A Mustang buffet awaited us...I ran around and took pictures of several cars that I had picked out as specific cars I wanted to remember.  (Wailun, dude, I found something that you don't have on your Roush!)

We then proceeded to our hotel for the rest of the weekend: the Doubletree Birmingham, which is right in the center of the University and for a brief period, we had a line of seven Mustangs and it looked pretty darn spectacular in the midst of the evening rush hour traffic!  MAA had planned a reception for 6pm - 9pm last night; but by the time we checked in, found a restaurant, and had dinner with my parents we missed the opportunity.

The parking garage at the Doubletree looks like it's own mini-car show.  We are hearing estimated of 5,000 cars expected at this show and we are going to check in today to get the specifics of what we need to do as a displaying vehicle.

Until later today....

Refreshing Shampoo? - From Co-Pilot Jeff

Greetings followers, friends and family,

I type this after finishing a shower at the Rodeway Inn in Bossier City, Louisiana. At the risk of sounding like some sort of hotel snob, let me assure you that such is not the case. We were spoiled by starting off the trip staying at the brand new Aliante Station in North Las Vegas. In times past I have stayed at very nice places like the above mentioned and at such charming places where my mom and I wore our shoes around the room because we had no idea where the carpet had been. I have also been awakened from slumbers by the gentle sound of Larry's Cesspool Service slurp-slurp-slurping away at 06:30 or thereabouts. Which reminds me, there is no clock in this hotel room! Ah, but, this room has such other charms about it.

You see, we thought the last place we stayed in, the Clarion Inn in Oklahoma City, was odd due to its bizarre configuration and footprint. It was a different hotel in a previous life (and decade), we are not sure which. The layout of the suite room was just wierd, there is no way to properly describe it without a picture which we did not take. The TV was in what I think was a closet once or perhaps a kitchenette. The walk-in closet area had an ironing board, but no light.

But, before that, we thought the last place we stayed in, the Days Inn in Santa Rosa, New Mexico, was odd due to the operators who learned English as a second language and had a hard time understanding that our HVAC unit was very much not happy but sort of worked after a while. Towels were scratchy too but now I am sounding very much the elitist.

Anyway, about the Rodeway Inn. Our room has at least two layers of wallpaper, leaky tub with cracked grout that is also cracked. The fluorescent light initially is a four foot long night light but if you just wait a while, it flickers and flashes and then lights up fully. The heat lamp / bathroom vent fan is but a memory these days - really - just a hole in the ceiling. Furniture is, well, varied. As smoking is still a common offense to non-smokers like us, this hotel has the eau de cigarette to it, especially our stuffy room. Larissa and I made a run to the great common bond of all Americans across this great country (Walmart) for a bottle of Febreeze. In the time it took me to yak on the phone with a buddy (who should be on this Mustang run with us but was concerned for the fragility of his garage queen to be able to withstand the assault of dust, dirt, rain, snow, hail, rock chips, semi-trucks, sunlight, darkness, being left all alone in a parking lot surrounded with a few HUNDRED other Mustangs and of course miles), we used all the Febreeze to try to freshen things up. It worked, sort of. We suspect this hotel is in the process of a re-modelling and our room has not yet been re-done. When we come back in 5 years for the 50th annual Mustang celebration, we expect things to be much improved as Mustangs Across America is using this hotel as the headquarters hotel for this leg of our journey. The bright spot - the shampoo says it is refreshing. I'm still waiting for that feeling but I am optimistic.

I will be the second person to admit when I have learned something new. I learned something new about our own Mustang tonight thanks to a very nice man from Virginia who brought his 2007 Roush Stage 2 convertible (very rare color, signed by Jack Roush himself) and his wife's 2006 Roush Stage 2 hardtop (same color as our car). There is an emergency trunk release handle that glows in the dark and is attached by cable to the inside trunk latch. It is there in case you 1) get stuck inside your own trunk for some reason or 2) Vinnie and Bruno place you there while chauferring you to the dockside. Any way, this annoying plastic handle has been getting in my way each time I load or unload Larissa's huge suitcase which is loaded with bricks or bags of cement or something, I dunno. So, we are talking to this man in the parking lot of the hotel while our fast food dinner gets cold and he is wiping down his cars with trunk lids open. I noticed that his trunk release latch is clipped up out of the way by two plastic clips on his 2007 convertible, but his 2006 does not have the clips. Guess what - our 2007 has those two clips and that is what they are intended to do and we never knew! Now, our latch thing is clipped out the way and I will no longer have to keep un hooking it from Larissa's cement lined suitcase. Victory!

This is but one example of the Mustang owners sharing knowledge and experiences. Everyone we have met has been friendly and helpful. We have much more to learn on this odyssey. The Mustang Nation is far bigger than I imagined.

In the morning, we depart Louisiana for Birmingham, Alabama. The MAA group has become almost too big to manage so we will probably join the others who power out of town prior to the official departure of Mustang One. We stand at about 400 plus cars now and have heard that the Mustang festival could involve 5000 or so Mustangs from all over the country. Our groups have representatives from Germany, Denmark, Poland, New Zealand, Australia and perhaps more. They are crazy. We are newbies to all of this.

Long day ahead. Good thing I used the Refreshing Shampoo. Stay tuned!

Playing Catch UP

Y"all are just going to have to forgive me the last two days.  Sunday night I could not access the blog site and yesterday by the time we had dinner, I was just too dang tired

A short Saturday Message

We had a long day.  It started at the Shelby Manufacturing Center with what seemed like 250 mustangs following the pace car. (They told us at the driver meeting that 175 cars registered in Las Vegas.)  The final overall number of cars entered is an awesome 643!!

So we all take off and about six of us missed the first exit.  OOPS!  DUH!  We turned around and as Jeff and I were going under the underpass to make our left hand turn to get back on the highway, we heard and saw a Ford Contour make the same left hand turn and slide on the slick surface (did I tell you it rained overnight in Las Vegas?); he slid up the underside of the overpass and stopped when he slid back down to the road surface.

After that interesting experience, we both were awed by Hoover Dam.  Which they are in the process of re-working so that you will go over the Dam on a HUGE bridge.  We chose to just let Jeff take pix out the window and not stop.

Then we proceeded on Route 66 and had a lot of fun seeing the Snow Cap which was the basis for the movie "Cars".  After that we got on I-40 and experienced rain, hail, and snow.  I missed an opportunity to get good pictures of the snow in Flagstaff.  For me, this is the closest I have been to snow since 2004.

Everone will be glad to know we made it safely to Holbrook, AZ where we are spending the night at the Holiday Inn Express.  But first, there were lines at both coin operated car washes in town as we all worked hard to remove the salt and sand from our cars.

No pictures tonight.  I will try to catch up with those tomorrow.  I am hoping y'all will give me a pass since this has been a wonderful but intense day.  Our mileage for the day was approximately 372 miles.

We start it all over at 8 am tomorrow.  Until tomorrow, have a wonderful Easter and enjoy the time spent with family!

Picture Catch up

Here is a view of our room, a GT500 pedal car, and anything else I think you might want to see so that I can catch you up.  It just has been so busy and unfortunatel Don and Cheryl are only going to Hoover Dam and then turning around.  We will miss you both!  We were blessed to meet you both and that we are all going away from this with some really good memories.

Friday and Carroll Shelby

Our day started out with a large Dunkin Donuts coffee for me and we registered for the casino's reward program while we waited for our brunch date with Don and Cheryl from CA.  Then we parted ways so that they could check out other area hotels for tomorrow night's stay and we could fill our pony with fuel.  We were blessed to find a Costco with fuel!  YES!

We met  back at the hotel to head out to the Shelby manufacturing facility for a tour and to their on-site cafe for dinner.  The tour was terrific!  We got to see the very first Cobra that was built in February of 1962.  Mr. Shelby reportedly has turned down an offer for 20 million for the car.  We got to sign the wall of the manufacturing plan, something Mr. Carroll likes since everyone always wants his autograph.

Dinner was simple, hearty fare: hamburger, pulled pork, baked beans, macaroni salad, beer and/or soda.  Kenny Youngblood a CARtoonist was coloring and personalizing various pictures for tips only.  Note to GHMC friends, I have a surprise for you!

We ended the evening doing a small amout of gambling.  Jeff is still winning our fortune as I type.
I found out I am much better at 25 cent slots than Roulette.

The last picture on this blog is the pre-production 2010 Shelby GT500, that will be the pace car for our drive across america.  Our car is all outfitted with her car number placard, our MAA oval sticker, and we were able to purchase a Mustang Across America decal for our back window.  We are super cool!

I cry UNCLE!

I promised a daily diary of our trip.  But after 600 miles of driving today in lovely weather, I am abosolutely wiped.

We arrived safely at the Aliante Station.  It is a luxurious and beautiful facility.  I have pix of our room and some of the Mojave scenery.  I have an unplanned day tomorrow and I PROMISE  to download the pictures.  Our only commitment is dinner and a tour of the Shelby Automobile campus starting at 4:00 pm.

We got to see a manufacturer's 2010 Shelby GT500, which will be the lead car in the drive.  It is a gorgeous piece of American automobile.

We met up with a really nice couple from Lodi and a gentleman from Santa Rosa, so for the last 100 or so miles we traveled togetherl. That was a new experience for me and I was the lead car!  "The Strip" is miles away from us and new construction and remodeling of existing casinos crowd the downtown area.

Check back tomorrow for a new update.
